Seventeen take part in the Cross Country Team's 10K and Half Marathon as part of Family Weekend festivities
While times were recorded for the participants, the annual Paul Smith's College Family Weekend 10K and Half Marathon are more about spending family time together and sharing some of the local experiences that our cross country team get to on a daily basis here in the Adirondacks
We had seventeen participants take part in this year's Family Weekend 10K and Half Marathon, hosted by the Cross Country Team. This event started in 2020 due to the travel and athletic restrictions resulting from the COVID pandemic. The cross country team was outstanding in 2020, but without other colleges and universities allowing athletic competitions and travel restrictions, we were only able to compete with Vermont Tech in the fall season. With 14,000 acres and social distancing and being outdoors in the Adirondacks while maintaining social distancing, we hosted the 10K and Half Marathon during the 2020 family weekend, giving our runners the opportunity to spend time with their family members who likewise took part in this relaxed event during the autumn foliage or the family members leapfrogged along the running route and cheered on the Bobcat runners, providing water and support.
We have maintained this event and it has become a tradition that gives the family members who make the trip to the college for Family Weekend to experience the autumn colors along our rural highways that our students and campus community gets to enjoy every day for a couple weeks this time of the year. The students and families are taking photos with their phones during the event, as the tree lined route has gorgeous displays of the red, orange and yellow leaves in late September.
Family members came to the campus from Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Vermont and New York to spend time with their student runners and meet their collegiate friends and coaches. This year, the entire entrauge headed to the home of Brooklynn Shumway, the daughter of Rodney and Lisa Shumway for a reception, and fellowship. There was plenty of food, beverages, snacks, and fun activities in the backyard to keep the students and the family members happy and amused. The Shumways have been especially supportive of the entire team through cross country and snowshoe seasons the past couple years and their efforts are sincerely appreciated by the students who are traveling from far and wide to attend Paul Smith's College.
The team will travel to Word of Life Bible Institute in Pottersville, NY next Saturday, with the women's 6K starting at 10:15 followed by the men's 8K at 11:15 AM. The start and finish will be located in the athletic field in the center of the campus, and promises to be hilly and challenging.
