Men's 1 Woodsmen's Team Dominates in Cobleskill
The Paul Smith's College Woodsmen's team sent 5 teams, each with six competitors, to the Spring 2022 SUNY Cobleskill Woodsmen's Meet this past weekend.
The PSC Men's 1 team dominated their division finishing the day in first place, while the PSC Men's 2 Team finished in ninth. The PSC Jack and Jill 1 and Women's 1 teams both had respectable third place finishes in their divisions. The Jack and Jill 2 was reduced to five competitors early in the meet due to injury, yet still managed to finish in tenth place out of 11 teams.
Singles Relay:
All traditional singles events were combined into a 'Singles Relay' which consisted of all six members of each time competing in their respective singles event in series with each other. The order of events was Axe Throw, Bowsaw, Barrel Split, Single Buck, and Standing Block. Once the time for the first five events was recorded, the sixth member of the team started the Cookie Stack event working to make horizontal cuts with a chainsaw on a vertical piece of wood; each cookie that did not fall to the ground counted for three seconds off the overall time.
The Men's 1 Team finished the relay in first place with an overall time of 2:22.09; the second-place time was 2:50.51 seconds. The average time in the men's division was around four minutes.
The Men's 1 team was behind in the relay event until the Standing Block Chop portion, where sophomore Danny Miner put on a very impressive chop on an 11-inch piece of Aspen for the come-from-behind win. After the relay, Junior Bradley 'The Wyalusing Wonder' Tessier stacked 11 cookies to reduce the team's time by 33 seconds, solidifying their first-place finish. The Men's 1 Team finished the relay in first place with an overall time of 2:22.09; the second-place time was 2:50.51 seconds. The average time in the men's division was around four minutes.
The Women's 1 and Jack and Jill team's both had very close second place finishes in the relay event, finishing about 20 seconds behind the first-place competitors.
Sawing:
Paul Smith's College dominated the team sawing events as the Men's 1, Women's 1, and Jack and Jill 1 all placed first in the team Cross-Cut Saw event.
Chopping:
The PSC Women's 1 Underhand Choppers (Sydney Krompasky, Madison Franco, and Hannah Aldrich) put up a combined time of 4:42.09, finishing three minutes before the second-place team. All three choppers displayed near perfect form drawing the attention of the crowd and their fellow competitors.
The Men's 1 Doubles Standing Block Choppers (Zach Cowperthwait and Danny Miner) absolutely pulverized a 12" piece of Aspen, finishing their chop in 42 seconds flat; the second-place time was nearly double that.
The day finished with the running of the Packboard Relay, where each member of the team sprints approximately 100 yards with a weighted Packboard that is tied by the first runner. The PSC Men's 1 team finished in first place despite heavy rain and muddy conditions.
"All of the PSC teams should feel proud of their performances today. We faced several adverse conditions, including heavy rain and some snow, throughout the day; all persevered and demonstrated the type of Paul Smith's grit our team and college are known for. We're looking forward to keeping this momentum going at the 2022 Spring Meet hosted by Finger Lakes Community College." - Keith Braun, Woodsmen's Team Coach.
