Bryce Shannon and Aidan Minihan pace the field at

the Frigus 15K and 4.7 Mile Snowshoe Races

The Paul Smith's College concluded the snowshoe racing season with the Frigus 15K and 4.7 mile Snowshoe Races, hosted by The Endurance Society at Moreau Lake State Park in Gansevoort, NY. Runners came from across the Northeast to compete in the Frigus snowshoe races, run primarily on hiking trails that traverse nearly 2,000 feet of elevation gain in the 15K and over 550 feet of climbing in the 4.7-mile race. Rather than following a machine groomed running surface, both Frigus race distances sent participants through the woods on ungroomed trails up and down steep ascents and of course steep descents on the summer hiking trails and presented exciting and yet tiring snowshoe running (and walking) for the athletes.  

The final half mile for participants took them across Moreau Lake, which although flat, presented new challenges, such as the slushy conditions found near former ice fishing holes, and the crusty snow across the lake broke away, leaving an uneven surface of dry granular snow and difficult navigation.  While the runners had visions of maintaining a decent stride across the lake, they were truly doing their best to remain upright while fighting fatigue. 

Bryce Shannon (FY: Sparrow Bush, NY) won the 15K snowshoe race in 1:44:01, in his longest competitive running event ever.  His time placed Shannon 4^th overall in the history of the Frigus 15K race.  

Paul Smith's College graduate, Zack Sprott – Scribner (Saranac Lake, NY) placed second with a time of 1:55:15, his second best finish in the race. Zack established a PR in 2022 with a time of 1:52:22, which still ranks 6^th in Frigus history.  Mat Matis (FY: Susquehanna, PA) placed third overall in 1:58:11 to rank nineth overall in the history of the event.  Wes Burkit (PSC graduate, Syracuse, NY) placed fourth in 1:59:32.  

Timothy James (FY: Lancaster, MA) placed nineth in 2:55:04, and followed close behind by fellow classmate Brock Boissey (Cadyville, NY) in 2:55:08 in 10^th place. There were 29 runners who finished the 15K. 

4.7 Mile Snowshoe Race – Local (Paul Smith's College) Results

Aidan Minihan (JR: Newark, DE) maintained his streak of snowshoe race victories, as he won the 4.7-mile race in 1:02:43, followed closely by fellow teammate, Cazimir Couble (JR: Spafford, NH) in 1:03:11 to place second. 

Paul Smith's College graduate, Nat Ross placed second for the women in 1:22:13 to earn a spot on the podium.  Erica Goodman of Gansevoort, NY won the women's 4.7-mile race in 1:11:19 in a very strong performance, as she placed third overall. 

Reece Perry (FY: Malone, NY) placed fifth for the men in 1:33:02, while Chloe Freund (SO: Clinton, NY) placed 6^th for the women in 1:39:45, followed closely by Joanna Kerchner (JR: Bath, PA) in 1:39:58 in 7^th.  Devin Stalnaker placed 10^th for the men in 2:02:47 to round out the Paul Smith's College athletes in the 4.7-mile race. A total of 33 athletes finished the 4.7-mile race.
