Canton Canoe Weekend ~ PSC Paddlers Win Men's and Women's Rushton Cups
Matt Williams and Nic Pendl paddle to Men's Rushton Cup Win; Ashley Evans and Chloe Mattilio Win for the Women
May 3, 2014
Paul Smith's College sent eight student paddlers to compete in Day 1 of Canton Canoe Weekend, while four seniors were presenting their Capstone presentations back on the campus. Despite their absence, their team mates did an admirable job battling the high waters of the Grasse River.
Matt Williams (FR) and Nik Pendl (FR) paddled Little Green Pig (LGP) to victory in the 5-mile men's C-2 Recreation event to win the Men's Rushton Cup in 59:37.
Ashley Evans (SO) and Chloe Mattilio (FR) paddled Little Brown Pig to win the 5-mile women's C-2 Recreation event to win the Women's Rushton Cup in 1:06:48. The last time Paul Smith's College enjoyed victories in both races was in 2007, and Tiffany Drake and Megan Cook won the women's cup in both 2006 and 2007 paddling the Little Brown Pig both years.
Dave Kucia (JR), Chris Peterson (JR), Bianca Fournier (JR) and Matt Fuirst (JR) paddled The Rivercat to a second place finish in the C-4 Collegiate 8 mile race. The PSC paddlers finished the 8 miles in 1:28:49. The team from St. Lawrence University paddled extremely well to win in 1:16:32 and won by over a dozen minutes, despite capsizing about 5 miles into the race.
The combination of a late spring, and recent rains resulted in extremely high waters on the Grasse River and through much of Taylor Park where the annual event was held. Special thanks go out to the race organizers and to the St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers for conducting this race as well as several others through the paddling season.
