Two PSC Canoes Finish First in 90-Miler
Saranac Lake, NY ~ The Paul Smith's College Marathon Canoe Team braved strong winds and cold rains on their way to winning two out of three registered events at the Adirondack Canoe Classic over the weekend.
The event, colloquially known as the "90-Miler," saw hypothermic conditions cause problems for everyone in what was supposed to be a three-day race. Instead, Day 3 was canceled, as race organizers were forced to pull the plug while considering the safety of all the paddlers.
The seven-person Voyageur Class team finished two full hours ahead of the next-fastest boat, adding to the impressive collection of trophies for the Bobcats in the classification. Head coach Matt Dougherty skippered the boat, with alum Timo Ziegler, Jacob Alberga, Griffin Smith (Saranac Lake, NY), Ezra Webster (East Aurora, NY), Tenzin Mathes (Guilford, VT), and Philip Matthews (Halfmoon, NY).
"It was a great weekend of racing with a lot of new racers, with six out of our 15 racers participating in their first 90-Miler," said Dougherty.
The Women's C-4 Stock classification was won by PSC alum Bee Johnson, Jessie Church (Bethlehem, NH), Olivia Caprio (Perkiomenville, PA), and newcomer Bridget Reusch (Farmington, ME).
The Men's C-4 Stock Bobcat team of Noah Rehberg (Anchorage, AK), Gabriel Lloyd (Charlestown, NH), Isaac Kristich (Palmer, AK), and August Pearson (Athens, GA) took second place in a very competitive race.
"It's always fun to race the 90 with so many other colleges and have a great weekend of competition," said Dougherty.
The team closes out their season with the Seneca Lake Monster Regatta on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal in Canandaigua, NY on Saturday, October 5th.
