United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships
Lakeland, Florida
Conditions: 86 degrees, scattered clouds, high humidity.
Fifteen runners from Paul Smith's College took part in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National championships in Lakeland, Florida on Friday, November 6th in hazy, hot and humid conditions. The men's team placed fourth overall, while the women's team placed eighth. There were 23 collegiate teams for both men and women that took part in this year's championships.
Corey Roth earned first team All American honors with a 7th place finish in the 8K race with a time of 27:52, followed by teammate Rob Calamia placing 8th in 28:08. Chloe Mattilio earned second team All American with a 14th place finish, with a time of 25:27 to pace the Lady Bobcats. For Roth, this was his second time earning All American, as he made a podium finish as a freshman in 2012. Mattilio has earned All American honors all three years running at Paul Smith's.
For the men, Joe St. Cyr finished in 30:27 for 35th place, followed by Louis Ferrone in 31:06 for 42nd place and Tyler Dezago in 31:53 and 55th place to round out the Bobcats scoring top five finishers. There were a total of 127 finishers in the men's 8K.
On the women's side, Ashley Evans paced 38th with a time of 27:20, followed by Corrie Desilets in 28:20 for 50th place, and Emelie Morton in 31:19 for 77th place. Sarah Butler rounded out the scoring five with a time of 31:33.
The heat and humidity really took it out of many of the runners, as numerous athletes were taken away by ambulance following the race to be monitored for heat related emergencies. Although the Paul Smith's College runners were challenged by the conditions, none of them succumbed to the environmental conditions requiring post-race medical attention.
For the men's team, this 4th place finish is quite a jump from last year's 9th place finish at nationals held in Syracuse, while the women's team repeated the 8th place finish.
