Bryce Shannon, Aidan Minihan and Morgan Cheney paced the Paul Smith's College Snowshoe Team with solid performances in the Stonewall 5 and 10K Snowshoe Races – Winona State Forest, Mannsville, NY
The Paul Smith's College Snowshoe Team headed to the Tug Hill Region, just south of Watertown, NY for the Stonewall Snowshoe Races held annually at the Winona State Forest, near Mannsville, NY. Nearly 70 athletes took part in the 5 and 10K races, but nearly half of the entrants stayed away due to the weather conditions. The local area received over 4' of snow in the prior 5 days, and given the forecast for an additional 12 – 18" it is quite likely that a great many people didn't make the trip.
Women's 5K: Paul Smith's College student, Morgan Cheney (JR: Prattsburg, NY) placed 2nd overall in the women's 5K with a time of 42:52. Kasie Naklick of Adams Center, NY won the event in 39:55. Morgan spent much of the collegiate cross country season overcoming nagging injuries, and seems to have overcome the debilitation injury in fine shape.
Chloe Freund (SO: Clinton, NY) placed seventh overall for the women in 49:29, followed by Joanna Kerchner (JR: Reading, PA) in 51:39, good enough for 10th place.
Men's 10K: Bryce Shannon (FY: Sparrowbush, NY) won the men's 10K in 1:07:45, his first snowshoe race victory. Shannon is the Junior Men's National Champion and the Junior Men's World Champion and yet running among the nation's best and the world's best men at large has no doubt encouraged him to rise to a higher level in a very short time. Shannon began snowshoe racing in December ~ just under two months ago.
Second in the men's 10K is Mat Matis (FY: Susquehanna, PA) with a time of 1:08:53. Both Shannon and Matis are showing steady improvement, as both are strong cross country runners from the collegiate team, and are doing exceptionally well.
Men's 5K: Aidan Minihan (JR: Newark, DE) won his first snowshoe race outright, winning the Stonewall 5K in 36:23, with teammate Cazimir Couble (JR: Spofford, NH) not far behind in 37:41 to place third overall. Brock Boissey (FY: Cadyville, NY) placed fourth in 40:04, with Reece Perry (FY: Malone, NY) in fifth with a time of 41:55. Noah Keys (SR: LeRoy, NY) also placed in the top 10, with a time of 45:35 finishing 9th.
