Paul Smith's College Snowshoe Team places six men and three women
in the top ten in the Gurney Lane 5K Snowshoe Races.
Shaun Donegan of the Hudson-Mohawk Runners Club paced the 5K, winning in a very respectable 22:48. Eliot Soderholm (PSC) placed second in 23:14, followed by teammate Wesley Burkit in 25:54. Tyler Kirschbaum (PSC) placed third in 26:00. Dermot O'Connor and Carson Wohlers placed 8th and 9th respectively for Paul Smith's.
Megan Stevenson of Lake Luzerne won the women's event in 35:38. Joanna Kerchner was the top finisher from Paul Smith's, placing 7th with a time of 42:40 for her first snowshoe race. Haven Bradt placed 8th in 43:02, and Ashley Carli placed 10th in 44:42.
The snow on the race course was packed, but with the recent rains and temperatures hovering around 34 degrees, the running surface was a bit slippery. The Gurney Lane Recreation Area trails are developed for mountain biking, hiking, and fat biking as well as snowshoe walking and running. The Town of Queensbury has been expanding the offerings within the park system for area residents and visitors.
The Paul Smith's College Snowshoe Team will be hosting the Empire State Games on February 3rd, with the three sprint events held at the college's soccer field (800, 100 and 400 meters) followed by the 5K at the Paul Smith's College VIC at 2 PM.
