Howlett to Serve as Men’s Basketball Interim Head Coach
Paul Smiths, NY ~ The Paul Smith's College men's basketball team will see a new yet familiar face as they prep for the 2026-2027 campaign as current women's basketball head coach, Alphonso "Zo" Howlett, takes over on an interim basis.
Howlett is no stranger to the men's game, having played NCAA Division III for Green Mountain College where we was a part of one of the best men's basketball teams in Golden Eagle history, winning the NCAA D3 Independent College League Title while going 21-5. The New York City native inherits a healthy roster from outgoing coach Tim Lamay, who has chosen to pursue other avenues.
"Having already developed a relationship with the men's program and the returning players, I feel that I will be a great resource to bridge the gap between seasons once a new head coach is chosen," said Howlett.
The athletic dept and Paul Smith's College would like to extend a sincere thank you to Coach Lamay, with the former skipper having built up a program that has seen an influx of players which has led to the establishment of a junior varsity program for the upcoming season.
"We thank Tim for his dedication to the program over the last two years. He has brought in a healthy number of players which has enabled us to develop players and add a jv team. We wish him luck in his future endeavors," said Luzzi.
The men's basketball team will look to return to the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Final Four, and hopefully earn a bid to their first-ever United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Men'd D2 National Tournament as they build toward a bright future. An announcement for a permanent head coach will be forthcoming and is expected before the start of the season.
