Paul Smith's College Paddlers Show Strong Performances in 3-day Adirondack Canoe Classic
2013 Adirondack Canoe Classic
September 6 - 8th ~ Old Forge to Saranac Lake, NY
Mike Cerasaro and Justin Andrews paddled Little Brown Pig (LBP) to it's rightful place 1~ first place in the 90-miler. This fiberglass Jensen 17 was constructed in 1984, and was purchased by the canoe team immediately before departing on Enviro-Trek 2000 from Paul Smith's College to the Statue of Liberty. Little Brown Pig earned the name during this lengthy canoe trip, and has won many events since returning to the campus from it's journey to New York City.
There were several canoe relay races that required a recreational canoe, and despite Little Brown Pig's age (it comes with great experience), this canoe is very stiff, and handles rivers, lakes, and shallows quite well. The past couple years, there were a couple new white canoes coming down from Canada that overtook LBP from the top spot in the 90 miler. Mike Cerasaro worked diligently over the winter months stripping down the hull, sanding LBP, making repairs, and applying marine grade epoxy paint inside and out ~ bringing LBP back into racing condition.
Over the past thirteen years, LBP experienced some serious damage to the hull, and it seems the aluminum sliders on the bow seat have broken three times mid-race. An entirely new seat was installed in hopes that she is ready for another decade of racing before another set of major overhauls.
Dylan Kirk and Ben Jacques won the C-2 Men's Stock in our newest canoe among the extensive fleet. This is probably the category in which the Paul Smith's College Marathon Canoe Team has registered the greatest number of canoes since 1996, and during all those years, we've never had a canoe win this category in the 90-miler. Prior to the explosion in the C-4 and prior to that ~ the war canoe categories, the C-2 Men's Stock class was always loaded with well over a dozen canoes featuring several seasoned racing paddlers. Both Dylan and Ben worked hard to prepare for the 90-miler in hopes that they could win the event, and as seniors, they did just that.
